Swimming is a great way to keep fit during winter

During winter, kids and adults alike can get restless not being able to spend time and stay active outside due to the cold weather. Swimming is a great way to remain active while being in an indoor environment, it’s a sure way to keep those energy levels maintained and fitness levels up without having to worry about being in the cold and wet weather.

Swimming all year round is not only great for your fitness and swimming progression but has a range of other benefits as well:

  • Build a strong immune system
Higher fitness levels gained through year-round swimming build stronger immune systems that make a adults and children more resilient to stress and illness. Some of us stop swimming or withdraw our children from swimming lessons when the temperature drops believing it will help avoid illness – Did you know? It is an old wives’ tale that ‘going out into the cold’ will get you sick.

  • Maintain confidence in the water
A discontinuation of swimming and swimming lessons through the winter months typically results in a decline in a child’s confidence and independence in the water. Children need to maintain and reinforce existing skills to advance and develop their ability in the water. Months of summer lessons end up “going to waste” as swimmers lose their “feel for the water” both physically and psychologically.

Such maintenance and reinforcement are particularly important for infant, toddler and pre-school aged children when long-term skill retention and muscle memory are starting to develop. This can be highly beneficial if your child finds themselves in a situation where their swimming skills could be life saving.

  • Build skills and coordination
Swimming has been proven to assist in brain development for school-aged children. It is regarded as vital for the development of academic performance, as well as coordination, motor skills, balance and concentration. Six months out of the water across the winter period can lead to problems such as fear of the water and a decline in performance.

  • Progress and fast track your results
Winter is the perfect time to focus on developing and fine-tuning skills in the water. It is the best time to learn the important life saving skills before the warmer months arrive and we spend more time in and around water. Progress through our swimming levels this winter!

  • Most importantly, Cure cabin fever!
Get the kids out of the house and away from screens. Swimming is a great way to cure your little one’s cabin fever, while still having fun and developing important skills.
